Nearly three decades after the fatal shooting of American rapper Tupac Shakur, a Las Vegas jury has found Duane \u201cKeffe D\u201d Davis guilty of first-degree murder, delivering the first conviction in one of hip-hop\u2019s longest-running murder cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Davis, 63, was convicted over his role in the September 1996 drive-by shooting that left Shakur mortally wounded near the Las Vegas Strip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jurors deliberated for less than three hours before returning the guilty verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although prosecutors did not accuse Davis of firing the shots that killed Shakur, they argued during the trial that he helped organise the retaliatory attack and supplied the gun used in the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The verdict brings a dramatic legal conclusion to a case that remained officially unsolved for almost 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shooting followed casino confrontation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Shakur was shot on the night of September 7, 1996, while travelling in a BMW driven by Death Row Records co-founder Marion \u201cSuge\u201d Knight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hours earlier, Shakur, Knight and members of their entourage had been involved in a confrontation at the MGM Grand with Orlando \u201cBaby Lane\u201d Anderson, Davis\u2019s nephew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prosecutors told the court that the confrontation became the motive for retaliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They alleged that Davis and others later went searching for Shakur before eventually locating the BMW carrying the rapper and Knight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A Cadillac pulled alongside the vehicle at an intersection before several shots were fired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shakur was struck multiple times and rushed to hospital. He died six days later, on September 13, 1996, aged 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Knight survived the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prosecutors did not identify Davis as gunman<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A central issue during the trial was Davis\u2019s alleged role in the killing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prosecutors did not claim he personally pulled the trigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Instead, they portrayed Davis as an organiser of the attack, arguing that he obtained the weapon and participated in the events that led directly to the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Under the prosecution\u2019s case, Davis could be held criminally responsible for the murder even without being the person who fired the fatal shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The jury ultimately accepted that argument and convicted him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Davis\u2019s own interviews became crucial evidence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The case against Davis was unusual because investigators relied heavily on statements he made years after Shakur\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For years, Davis publicly discussed his knowledge of the shooting in interviews and other appearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He also discussed the case in his 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend<\/em>, providing his account of what happened on the night Shakur was attacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those statements eventually became an important part of the prosecution\u2019s evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The trial therefore produced an extraordinary twist in a case that had frustrated investigators for decades: rather than a newly discovered murder weapon or breakthrough DNA evidence, statements made publicly years after the killing helped prosecutors build their case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Defence says Davis exaggerated his story<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Davis had pleaded not guilty and disputed the prosecution\u2019s interpretation of his previous statements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His defence argued that some of the stories Davis told publicly had been exaggerated or fabricated and should not have been treated as reliable admissions of criminal responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Defence attorney Michael Sanft also questioned the lack of physical evidence directly connecting Davis to the murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The jury, however, rejected the defence case and returned a guilty verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Davis is expected to challenge the conviction through the appeals process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who killed Tupac?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Despite the conviction, one question that has followed the case for decades remains more complicated: who actually fired the gun?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The prosecution did not establish that Davis was the shooter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Anderson, Davis\u2019s nephew, had long been discussed by investigators in connection with the shooting. He denied involvement before his death in an unrelated shooting in 1998.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Other men were also alleged to have been inside the Cadillac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Davis is nevertheless the first person to be convicted of murder in connection with Shakur\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The distinction is important. The jury\u2019s verdict establishes Davis\u2019s criminal responsibility for the killing, but it does not necessarily resolve every unanswered question surrounding who physically fired the shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Arrest came 27 years after Tupac\u2019s death<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n For decades, no one was charged with Shakur\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That changed in September 2023 when Las Vegas authorities arrested Davis following a renewed investigation into the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The arrest came after police searched a Nevada property connected to Davis as investigators revisited evidence surrounding the 1996 shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His prosecution subsequently became one of the most closely watched cold-case murder trials in American entertainment history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What happens to Keffe D now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Davis now faces the possibility of spending the remainder of his life in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His sentencing is scheduled for October 13, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His legal team is also expected to appeal, meaning the guilty verdict may not be the final courtroom battle in the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For now, however, Davis stands convicted of murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A case transformed by the suspect\u2019s own words<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The conviction also offers an unusual conclusion to a case surrounded for decades by rumours, documentaries, books and competing theories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As witnesses died and the physical trail grew colder, Davis continued speaking publicly about what he knew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those statements eventually became part of the evidence prosecutors placed before a jury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The defence attempted to portray them as exaggerations rather than reliable admissions.
